2013 Grade 12 Western Art Scholarship

Robyn Feluch takes painting classes at Swinton's with Michelle Grant (2012 Outstanding Artist Achievement Award) and is making great strides toward greatness. We are always very proud when our students achieve something great.

Here is a bit of the Western Wheel article:

When a DeWinton teen set to work painting a buffalo resting comfortably in the snow last winter she didn't dream it would be admired by thousands from around the world.

Seventeen-year-old Robyn Feluch's buffalo captivated a panel of five judges with a history in art. The painting, titled "The Story Begins Here" placed second out of 16 entries from 13 communities in the rural category for the Calgary Stampede Western Art Auction's Grade 12 Western Art Scholarship competition.

2013. Ready to be an an artist?

2013. Ready to be an an artist?

Art is a cake that comes in layers...

After 18 years of helping artists achieve their unique vision, we have come to recognize that art has a different meaning for different people. Art can be a very serious endeavour or a playful game. For some, the goal is to build a practice and sell artwork in a commercial gallery. Others enjoy doodling and bringing ideas to life. The important thing is your artistic journey.

Let's begin... Wherever you find yourself is exactly the right place for you. The next step is the only important step. Take it. "Don't wait until you know who you are to make things." You're ready now. Begin.

10 Things I Know About Painting

By Doug Swinton

Since the day the late Brock Linehan asked me "What do you know for sure?", and I had trouble answering, I've never stopped asking myself that question. Over the long haul some things keep repeating themselves and as I paint in my own studio or attempt to solve problems with my students, I realized that some things are always true. This list keeps growing but here are a few of those "for sure" things I've come to believe.

If there is anything you believe to be true every time, in other words, universal to every good painting, please post it in the comments section.

Spotlight on Doug Swinton

"The thing that attracted me to draw Brandi was the simplicity of her image. When I saw her I thought she would make an awesome drawing. There wasn't a lot of shading involved. It was about her eyes, nose and mouth, silhouetted by her shock of blond hair. Her mysterious allure - nothing else. It sounds cliché but the truth of the matter is that simplicity wins out every time. Though I like to challenge myself continually, there comes a time when I just know I can draw something end and enjoy it. BRANDI embodied this."

Being self-critical is a waste of time. Try drawing instead.

Sometimes it seems impossible to begin painting. You may have no idea what to paint or where to begin. This may not be true for those that always paint the same subject in the same way, but for those that wish to create something unique, it can be a serious block.

I'm not going to pretend to know all the solutions, which tend to be as varied as art itself, I only want to present one easy way that has consistently worked for me in hopes that it may also work for you. Try it next time you are feeling uninspired and let me know how it turns out...

Love Reds

Introduction: Pigment of Love - RED

Add depth to your palette with this comprehensive guide to the history and variety of different red pigments.

"Red is the colour of fire and blood. A mysterious pigment with positive and negative connotations: bloodshed, aggression, war, and hate are on one side, and love, warmth and compassion on the other side."

"Red unfailingly provides focal points to a painting, particularly when placed alongside a cool color such as green. But red can appear garish if overdone."

What are the best red pigments to include on your palette?

New product at Swinon's

For this article we went to the Swinton's Research & Development Team. Deep in our secret underground facility we gave the white lab coat and goggles to Duane Hendricks. His mission: to test the new Canson Touch Sanded Pastel Paper with the Unison Pastels.

All kidding aside. Along with the likes of Horace Champagne and Susan Woolgar (demo), Duane is one of Canada's most accomplished pastelists and he has offered his skill to give us a review of Canson's new addition to the paper world, Mi-Teintes Touch Sanded Texture Board.
