Window Permit Struggle - Update...

Posted by: Milo

Tagged in: petition

The city has somewhat extended their hand. The mural will be allowed to remain until the end of October at which time we can reapply for a permit. We were told that our application will be denied but we will be allowed to go to the appeal board where our case will be arbitrated. This does not mean we will be granted a permit, only that more city officials will look at it and pass judgment.

Help us keep our window mural!

The City of Calgary and it's petty officials won't let us keep our beautiful window mural. We think that's unfair!

They say it's signage. We know it's art. It looks beautiful and it is not a danger to the public in any way what so ever.

Why is it allowed on city buses but not our building?

We believe it should not be up to administration characterized by excessive red tape and routine to decide what is art and to make it difficult to beautify our neighborhoods and promote our businesses.
Help us fight the bureaucracy by signing our petition. We will submit it to the City of Calgary in November 2009.

Colour me Inspired!

by: Katherine Anderson

These days, I’m seeing colour in new ways.  I see the coolness of a deep red and the yellowish tinge in a bright green.  I practice painting my own colour wheels, in hopes that I’ll soon be able to replicate with ease the shades that I see in the natural world.  I’ve been inspired by my latest painting course!

I have taken a course at ACAD, and two at Swinton’s, and I strongly recommend both.  But, if you can’t attend classes (or, even if you can), make a trip to the library for some inspiration!

The Calgary Public Library has all kinds of resources to inspire you:

Student Spotlight - Lisa Roos

lisa_roosMy name is Lisa Roos and I’ve been a student at Swinton’s for nearly 2 years now, which isn’t long comparatively speaking.  I attend classes on Wednesday evenings conducted by the ever-talented, ever-entertaining Doug Swinton.  I have also had the privilege of painting under the tutelage of Michele Zarb (who I credit for giving me my start), and workshops with Holly McWilliams, goddess of figure painting and drawing.  Truly the most patient people I know, as I am sure I am a handful!

Student Spotlight - Mike Beckett

My name is Mike Beckett and I've been a student at Swinton’s for a couple of years. I’m currently taking a class with Loretta on Wednesday nights, and I also take Holly’s figure drawing classes whenever I can. I’m definitely more into drawing, as you can see from the pieces below, but also learning to paint.

What do I enjoy most? ... It's a night out with my daughter.. she takes classes Wednesday night with me. And just getting away and being able to focus on learning new stuff. Loretta’s a great help to an artistic putz like me... lol. Holly’s figure drawing classes are a rush... nothing like drawing from life to get the creative juices flowing. Quite a different experience from Wednesday night classes.

Have I learned anything? Yeah... i’ve loosened up some, although Loretta will tell you otherwise i’m sure...lol. Through the opportunity to play around with different media I'm developing more confidence in my artistic judgement.
