Petition

Help us keep our window mural!

The City of Calgary and it's petty officials won't let us keep our beautiful window mural. We think that's unfair!

They say it's signage. We know it's art. It looks beautiful and it is not a danger to the public in any way what so ever.

Why is it allowed on city buses but not our building?  We believe it should not be up to administration characterized by excessive red tape and routine to decide what is art and to make it difficult to beautify our neighborhoods and promote our businesses.

Help us fight the bureaucracy by signing our petition. We will submit it to the City of Calgary in November 2009.

SIGN HERE.

Thanks!!!

As a local Calgary design firm specializing in environmental graphic design I have found the City of Calgary planning department to be increasingly arbitrary in their interpretation of the sign bylaws and regrettably share your frustration. Under the sign bylaw this mural should be recognized an "Art Sign" which is exempt of this requirement. I respect your effort to breath new life and character into an area near Macleod Trial that has remained a visual embarrassment for years. I wish you much success on your appeal.

I wish you all the luck in fighting for your right to keep your mural up on your store and to stand up to these irrational, backward thinking city by-law bullies that will never get their priorities straight. Calgary is bland enough as it is without any expressed free forms of artwork, and it's about time that a down to earth business like yours has taken the initiative to express your creativity and to help make this city more visually appealing, and for that, I commend you. Good luck on your appeal!

When I look at buses in this city it does not look like art it is graffiti crass advertising.
If the city had to follow the same rule as us lowly general population types they would write less laws.

The councilmen/woman say they want more art in society but when a few of us get together in a public park - out of the way, and make music, the bylaw will tell you to move on or be fined.

I think that Bill Bruce should be in an elected capacity and not appointed. Any position that has the ability to cripple and mussel a business in to financial distress should be elected so the people can fire them.

Art is the only way a population can prove it social evolution.

Hypocrits at City Hall
written by Jane Morgan , September 04, 2009
This is insane, there is currently a Calgary Alderman (Diane Colley-Urquhart) who has a campaign office with the windows 100% covered with signs, yet she is exempt?????

You can read more on my blog. It does seem to be allowing me to post a link. Go to janemorgan.blogspot.com and scroll down to September 2nd entry.

By-Law Officers Overwelmed
written by Paul Sawler , September 06, 2009
How many times have we heard this. There are just not enough by-law officers to adequately enforce bylaws that deal with derelict vehicles, at large dogs and cats, unsightly lots and countless other issues that make our city a less attractive and desirable place to live. With so much work and so little time, perhaps they should prioritize their efforts in something that will clean up our city and make it a better place. This action will do neither.

This art breathes life into a very drab area of the city. It is neither an eyesore or safety issue. Let's get our civil servants doing things that really matter!
