To Pastel, or Not
Instructor: Loretta Date: May 26, 2012 Time: 10am to 4pm Cost: $130
There are rumours out there that "pastels are not conservational". This is but a fairy tale. Take the time to look up Chardin or Degas and tell me their work is not everlasting. Chardin painted in the eighteenth century and Degas lived in the early nineteen hundred. If you have ever seen an original than you know they will last forever.
What is pastel? Raw pigment. The same pigment colours you get in every medium but it is dry and mixed with small ammount of binders that allow the artist to paint with almost pure pigment.
The next comment would be "but it is so messy". Remember when you were a kid, making pictures in the dirt, building sand castles, even walking and feeling the sand between your toes? Remember having an intimate feeling of being at one with your surroundings? This is pastels!
Come explore painting Landscapes in Pastel.
You will be introduced to different supports ideal and to the different types of pastels available. A short demo on how to proceed through a painting and different techniques that can be used will be demonstrated.
The students will need their own supplies, and grounds. I will introduce new grounds and they will be available for purchase at Swinton's.
