About the Event

Two Day Workshop:

November 7th - 10:00am - 4:00pm

November 8th - 10:00am - 4:00pm

Instructor: Rex Beanland

The purpose of this workshop is to demonstrate a simple but effective approach to painting urban landscapes. The goal is to capture an impression of the subject and to capture it quickly, using big, bold washes. The emphasis is always on impression over detail. The motivation is to allow the painting to tell a story.

In this workshop you will learn:

  • How to create an exciting centre of interest using figures and cars
  • How to create a strong composition and to use value and colour to direct the viewer’s eye to your centre of interest.
  • You will also learn simple and fun ways to quickly create both figures and cars.

The workshop is structured so that no fancy drawing skills are required!

Rex Beanland artist bio · Website

For many years I have concentrated on cityscapes. I paint them because I love the energy of cities and am continually fascinated by people. My goal is to capture the interactions between people and the places they live. I can often be found wandering the streets and alleys, sketchbook in hand, capturing those fleeting interactions of everyday life. I enjoy the challenge of drawing and painting the shapes of city life but I judge a work to be successful when it tells a compelling story that draws the viewer in.

Supply list:

  • Paint:
  • - Ultramarine blue
  • - Burnt sienna
  • - Chinese White or white
  • - gouache
  • - Cadmium Yellow or another bright yellow
  • - Cadmium Red Light

  • - A large natural hair round brush such as #12
  • - A large Squirrel Mop brush or Hake Brush
  • - A smaller round such as #6 or #8
  • - Rigger Brush

  • - Palette
  • - Paper

(* Please Note: People who want to learn watercolour are always encouraged to have good quality (ie professional) paper, paint and brushes. In my experience, the most important of these are paper so I encourage you to buy single sheets of a professional quality paper such as Arches or any other handmade paper. If you have student quality paper you will end up very frustrated.)

Any handmade paper such as Arches or Winsor & Newton will work fine. I use roughly though cold press will work just as well. Single sheets will be the most useful so you can cut the paper into different sizes.

Sizes: For this workshop you will need a few smaller sheets of paper. I like to do little practice to teach specific points. For these little practices, you should have a number of small pieces of watercolour paper (something like 8 x 10 or smaller). For each day’s demo, the sizes will vary so having full sheets will mean you can cut it to any size. In general, my demos are meant for 12 x 16. If you are brave you can definitely use the same format at a larger size. Remember to add 1” to each side to allow for taping the paper. Therefore to end up with a 12 x 16 image you will cut the paper 13 x 17.

- Board A board or hard surface to tape the paper to (such as a piece of plywood, panelling or Masonite)

Extras:

Water container Paper towels Masking Tape Spray bottle Toothbrush (an excellent tool for removing paint) Xacto knife

Also

Pencil, eraser, ruler
