Her personal practice includes large-scale works in oil, charcoal, and mixed media, often informed by narrative themes and personal experience. However, her approach to teaching emphasizes the development of fundamental skills: drawing from observation, understanding form and light, mastering composition, and building confidence with traditional materials. Skilnick believes that a strong foundation in technique is essential for any artist, whether their work is representational, abstract, or conceptual.

In the classroom, she introduces students to time-tested methods used by master painters throughout history, helping them build technical fluency before moving into more expressive and personal directions. While elements of storytelling and contemporary relevance are woven into her instruction, the primary focus is on cultivating visual literacy, craftsmanship, and artistic discipline.
