Service Description

Date & Time: Saturday, April 27, 9:30 - 4:00 PM Sunday, April 28, 10:00 - 4:00 PM Location: 7160 Fisher St SE, Calgary (Swinton's Art Supplies) A fun and light approach to working with soapstone stone. You will carve your own piece of stone while Vance guides you through the process of shaping, carving and polishing, helping solve the challenges you encounter at each phase. Each student will come away from this workshop with a finished piece and with a better sense of how to see and execute in the 3D. No skills are required other than to be willing to have fun! Supply List: All these items should be readily available at your hardware store. Firstly protecting our health. So with that in mind, you should have the following: · A pair of work gloves, leather if possible · A pair of safety glasses · A dust mask; for our purposes, the lite paper one will do unless you have real problems with dust · Rubber gloves Also from your hardware store, you should be able to get the following items: · 2 sheets of 50-grit or 60-grit sandpaper (precut into 12 squares) · Some coarse and some fine steel wool · 2 sheets 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper (1 cut into 12 squares, 1 whole sheet · Hammer · Chisel · Plastic dishpan with smooth bottom · Black wax china marker pencil Please also bring · 1 roll of paper towel · Several old clean (soft) rags or tea towels · Regular wood saw if you have one · Weights to hold down your reference material Dress in comfortable clothes - overalls are great, you will be making a lot of dust and wearing lots of it. The good news is it washes out. Stone: Soapstone of your choosing (recommend 1 or 2 pieces) <-- Available at Swinton's Art. It would be useful to be thinking of what you would like to be carving and perhaps gather some visual aids i.e pictures, small plastic models or whatever might spark your creativity. A word of caution for those who have never carved before -try and keep your design not too complicated! You don't want to set yourself up for failure by choosing something too difficult for your first time out!
