(Swinton's Art Supplies) (Swinton's Art Supplies) Levels: Beginner - Intermediate Instructor: Lori Lukasewich Medium: Charcoal Drawing Dive into the beauty of portrait drawing with one of the simplest and most elegant materials—vine charcoal. You’ll learn her favourite subtractive drawing technique, a wonderfully forgiving and almost meditative process where you both add and erase charcoal to reveal your image in a graceful push-and-pull. On Day 1, we’ll explore the structure of adult faces, learning clear methods for proportions and feature placement. On Day 2, we’ll turn to children’s portraits, which require a different approach—but build directly on the skills from the first day. With this method, you’ll begin by toning paper with charcoal, then gradually sculpt highlights and shadows until your portrait comes to life. Whether you’re new to portraiture or looking for a fresh technique, this workshop offers a relaxed, inspiring way to deepen your drawing practice. Supply List (You can download the supply list at checkout or on our art workshops page.) - Min 8 x8” photo, b&w, full face adult [We can see both ears] - x1 8 x 8" [min] photos of adult faces in silhouette( from the side) - 18"x24" Pad of white cartridge paper (smooth as possible) or 9x12 sketchbook (the new Mixed Media ones are great, they expand your possibilities) - 1 full sheet BFK Rives paper cut in 4 quarters -HB pencil -Charcoal pencil - 3 medium vine charcoal sticks (minimum) -1 large size vine charcoal stick[ can be hard to find, if you can’t, just bring more med sticks] OR powdered charcoal and a ponce bag. ( I use an old lightweight sock closed with a rubber band) - Kneadable eraser - White plastic eraser - Paper towels or shop towels
