(Swinton's Art Supplies) This workshop is suitable for those artists who are serious about learning new concepts that will take their portrait work to a new level of understanding. For oil and acrylic painters. All painting demonstrations will be done in oil. Some painting experience to an advanced level. In this exciting workshop, we will delve more deeply into a process of painting relationships and ideas than formulas. As artists, we need to develop a deep understanding in order to make beautiful paintings. What makes a beautiful painting? This is one of the thought-provoking ‘ideas’ we’ll be exploring, in depth, in this challenging and eye-opening 2-Day workshop as we explore “Painting the Portrait”. To achieve our goal, our primary focus will be to pay close attention to such major concepts as light and beautiful paint quality, while exploring a simplified approach to painting the portrait. All while staying true to the fundamentals in order to portray your subject convincingly: Shape, Value, Edges & Colour. On the first morning of this 2-Day Workshop, Bobbi will demonstrate an oil painting portrait from a photo. During this demonstration, Bobbi will explain her process; the decisions she makes, and students will be free to ask questions throughout. The remainder of the workshop, the students will be working on their own paintings from their own photos, utilizing the ideas and concepts learned from the demonstration. There will be plenty of hands-on guidance from Bobbi throughout the workshop. Here are just some of the “ideas” we'll explore in our workshop: 1) Mass Design: "Massing In" puts your idea into your space, size, and placement. 2) Brushstrokes: the language of painting. 3) The Fundamentals: Shapes | Values | Edges | Colour: The simpler, the better. 4) Simple! See the beauty, and you'll paint it, rather than merely copying reality. The simpler the idea, the more powerful the painting. 5) Paint from a photo “as if you’re painting from life”.
