Service Description

Date & Time: Friday, May 31, 6:00 - 8:00 pm (Friday Night Demo) Saturday, June 1, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm (Class) Location: 7160 Fisher St SE, Calgary. (Swinton's Art Supplies) Instructor: Brenda Banda Johnson Levels: Some experience painting - Advanced levels. This workshop is geared toward artists who would like to learn to work with palette knives, either as additional tools to supplement their brushwork or as primary painting tools. Using knives is a fun and freeing way to paint - they force you out of painting detail to a large extent as well as speed up your painting process by allowing you to quickly create the impression of detail without a bunch of tedious brushstrokes. Plus they're a great tool for adding visual interest, texture, and depth to your work. We will spend time "playing" with our knives and a limited color palette to get the feel of how the paint behaves when you manipulate it with different knives and different strokes. We'll work on "how to's" for specific subject matter. Finally, we'll create 1 or 2 small paintings putting the techniques together. The techniques we'll work on apply to both oils and acrylics, but I'm an acrylic painter and I've honed my skills using acrylics. I would highly recommend using acrylics for the workshop - if you paint thick with oils it will take months for your work to dry! Please view the supply list at checkout or on our "Art Workshops" page.
