What makes a landscape feel poetic? Is it a delicate harmony achieved by understatement and suggestion, rather than literal and obvious? Is it the mood and emotion it conveys instead of a detailed representation of reality? Whatever the answer, pastel is one of the best mediums for creating this effect. In this workshop, we'll look at paintings by the great masters and explore the principles and design elements they used to create poetic landscapes. We'll then apply those ideas to painting from photographic reference. Although the demonstration will focus on landscape, the same principles can be used for any subject. Working with the building blocks of painting—composition, value pattern, colour scheme, texture and edges—you'll learn how to bring your reference photos to life while creating paintings with mood, atmosphere, and simplicity. Some experience with pastel painting is recommended. Please bring good-quality reference photos. Supply List: Please view supply list at checkout or on our “Art Workshops” page.
