Dont buy art supplies in Edinburgh!

I was considering buyng canvas boards in Edinburgh since I am arriving ealry and travelling around and trying to minimize luggage. Forget that! A single W&N 8x10 board is 4.95 pounds, thats $9.20 CAD each plus some V.A.T. !! Buying another cheaper brand is 3.95 ($7.34) each. So I am stocking up in Canada with everything I need.

Woah! Thanks for this info Art!

Are you painting in acrylic or tackling oil this trip? Some people have talked about bringing unstretched canvas to tape to a panel for an inexpensive lightweight option. Easy for acrylic, but would need a wet painting carrier for oil. We are planning a 'supplies and gear' Zoom chat soon - stay tuned.

Sue

A wee thank you!

Thanks for getting those second deposits in on time, everyone! I am busy going over plans with the tour group and tweaking our itinerary and look forward to sharing the final details soon!

Here is a great tag to fill in and include with your paint when you stow it in your carry on bags. I have also included a link to a great article in International Artist Magazine about travelling with artist's pigments. (The word 'PAINT' is verboten at the airport - no matter how you explain, the security peeps think you're going to bust out and paint the room! 🤷‍♀️)

In response to Jenny's question regarding a travel friendly set up:

I have decided to focus on thumbnail sketching and small watercolour pieces and getting some good photos to take home for larger paintings. I purchased a small pochade box that fit my camera tripod and takes up minimal space in my backpack. I've attached a photo. I've signed up for a weekend plein air workshop in order to give it a try and will let you know how that works out...fingers crossed.

What a lovely little set-up, Joan! Plein air painting is a bit like golf, I think! Some times we are swinging wildly and sometimes we get a hole-in-one - but the aim is to have a great time enjoying the day, doing the best we can in the moment!

Gear Question from Jenny!

Hi Doug and Sue,

I know it’s aways off - but I’m working out packing my supplies for Pleine air travel.

My current setup 9x12 Gorilla Box with a good tripod. The Gorilla Box takes up most of a good sized rolling suitcase. It’s annoying!! But I’ll stick with it if you think I should.

Can you share your setups with me? I’m open to investing in a smaller or lighter but useful setup.

Much thanks!!

Jenny

Thanks Sue, all your comments are very helpful. I also thought not to bother with oils but will paper be ok for acrilycs. I have some heavy watercolour paper that I could cut to smaller sizes.
